Usually, the lip sits just above the top of the teeth. However, in some people, there is a disproportionate gum tissue to teeth ratio. A gummy smile, or ‘excessive gingival show’ - to give it its medical term - may be caused by a number of factors. These can include problems with the teeth, lips and the gum tissue itself.
Perhaps around 15% of women and 4% of men suffer with this condition. However, the numbers are probably much higher because most people do not present to doctors for correction. It can leave them feeling self-conscious about their smile.
treatment for a gummy smile
In many cases a gummy smile may be amenable to treatment with BOTOX®. A couple of carefully placed injections weaken the activity of one of the smile muscles, which allows the upper lip to cover more of the gum.
